Anson was one of three sailors from the San Antonio being lowered into the water in an inflatable boat during a routine maneuver transferring personnel to another ship. When two cables became hooked, the inflatable boat flipped over and the three sailors went into the water. Two sailors were recovered safely, but Ansong remained missing, and an extensive search did not find him. He had been categorized as missing until the official announcement March 13 of his death.
He was assigned to USS San Antonio (LPD 17) as it conducted operations in the Gulf of Aden
