While in Iraq he studied the local language and became so fluent that during his subsequent deployments his unit operated without an interpreter. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of Iraqi Operation Freedom serving three tours of duty in Iraq with the 3rd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
